Sniffer dogs, craft ale and Tom Jones – It was a heady mix of Welsh talent that made their way to Hong Kong and Shanghai for the latest Welsh government trade mission, and we were privileged enough to join them.
Back in February Jardine Norton accompanied 14 of Wales’ rising business stars on a trade mission to Hong Kong and Shanghai. The remit – to sell Wales to the World.
The mission, which was part subsidised by the Welsh government, included a varied programme of in-market events and networking opportunities. It was a fantastic chance for all involved to gain a first-hand view on the trading and export opportunities available to Welsh businesses. More informal events were included in the programme too, and we were even surprised one evening by a visit from one of Wales’ most famous exports – Sir Tom Jones. (I’d love to say I resisted the urge for an autograph, but… well, it was Tom Jones!)
The presence of global superstars aside, representatives from the Welsh government stated that the trip was one of the best attended they have ever organised, and it was certainly impressive to see the huge variety of businesses and talent in attendance. From Wagtail, who train and send expert sniffer dogs all over the world, to the award-winning Tiny Rebel brewery, whose craft ales would certainly impress the world over, it was clear that the entrepreneurial fire is burning brighter than ever in Wales.
As an after dinner rendition of Delilah by the Hong Kong male voice choir at the British Embassy brought the final evening to a close, the feeling from all was that the mission had been a great success. As well as the quality of the businesses involved, it was clear that more and more companies are seeing the benefits that overseas trade can bring.
A combination of exporting being easier than ever before and the uncertainty surrounding the effect Brexit may have on existing trade links has meant that looking for opportunities in overseas markets such as China has become an attractive option for businesses of all sizes. It’s extremely positive to see governments offering opportunities such as this to enterprises that wish to expand their horizons.
